The region of Peel is expecting population growth and as the existing water network ages, the regional government saw the need to invest in infrastructure to provide a dependable and safe supply of clean water. This is one of the largest and most extensive watermain initiatives the Region of Peel has ever designed and constructed. The Hanlan Water Project includes the installation of a 2.4 metre diameter Hanlan Feedermain Watermain and the 1.5 metre Mississauga City Centre Subtransmission Watermain. It will run approximately 14.5 kilometres from a water treatment facility to the reservoir. Six large shafts had to be constructed along the route with the deepest one being 52 meters. The shafts were being constructed using a slip form forming system and had a zero tolerance for leaks. Each slip form lift would pour 10 feet of concrete and this would create multiple construction joints along the shafts. They needed a proven waterproofing system that was compatible with the slip form construction methodology and could accommodate a fast-paced schedule.
Technicore chose Kryton’s Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) Waterproofing Admixture to waterproof the concrete as it eliminated the need for a blind side waterproofing membrane. Since KIM integrally waterproofs the concrete itself, it saved labor by eliminating the need for intensive detailing required when using traditional membranes around seams. It also removed any risk of damage when the slip forms were moved in between concrete pours. KIM’s ability to self-seal cracks that develop over the life of the structure will continue to mitigate the risk of future leaks and need for repairs for the life of the structure. To treat construction joints, Kryton’s Krytonite Swelling Waterstop and Krystol Waterstop Treatment were used together to form the Krystol Waterstop System. It is the most versatile waterproofing construction joint system available, offering different levels of protection based on risk and constructability. The project was a success with Kryton’s integrated waterproofing systems keeping it water tight.

As part of the Krystol Leak Repair System, Krystol Repair Grout is a crystalline concrete waterproofing product that stops the flow of water to permanently repair leaking cracks, holes and joints in concrete, and can also be used to resurface and waterproof defective, damaged or deteriorating concrete. The grout employs advanced fiber technology and shrinkage controlling additives to prevent cracking.
Krytonite Swelling Waterstop is a synthetic rubber waterstop that uses swelling pressure to seal concrete construction joints and stop water.
