The University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD) is recognized as the country’s premier institution for higher education, serving over 2,800 students across six facilities. Since its inaugural year in 2000, UBD’s Institute of Health Sciences has expanded beyond solely providing medical training. Graduate programs, such as a Masters in Primary Health Care and Public Health, as well as further undergraduate programs in four main disciplines – Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Nursing and Midwifery, are now offered.
This expansion in program offerings necessitated the extension of UBD’s campus, which included a new building altogether. As a leader in providing leading and innovative health care students, UBD also focuses on the environment around them. The new campus building was designed with a keen emphasis on sustainability. For example, energy saving solutions included exposed concrete floors, automated light controls and a rain harvesting and recycling system. It was important to UBD and the project team that the same sustainable concept be used for the concrete waterproofing.
In order to ensure the a sustainable practices were used throughout the construction process, a products green credentials were looked at. BUE Brunei suggested that Kryton’s Krystol technology be used to ensure a watertight concrete structure, as well as providing the sustainable aspects the Ministry of Education was looking for. The team was delighted to note that Kryton’s Krystol technology helps buildings earn valuable LEED points by using no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), eliminates the need for environmentally harmful petroleum based membranes, minimizes jobsite waste, enables concrete to be recycled at the end of life, and, most importantly, is a permanent waterproofing solution.
Krystol T1 & T2 was used for the roof and gutter areas, all the moisture latent areas such as toilets and pipes, as well as the M & E plant. Over 2,850 m2 (30,677 sq/ft2) of Krystol T1 & T2 was used, and is performing to the sustainability standards set during the planning stages of the UBD expansion.
Krystol T2 is a surface-applied crystalline slurry treatment that transforms new or existing concrete into a permanent waterproofing barrier.
