Once hockey season is over, it’s time for arenas to make room for other sports and events outside the ice rink. However, for some arenas, that can mean removing the rink’s ice slab entirely, which was certainly the case for the Sherwood Twin Arenas in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Unfortunately, that also meant exposing the concrete underneath the ice to oncoming abrasive forces. After all, sports equipment, teams, and more would likely be moving across the concrete surface. This direct physical contact would eventually wear down the concrete, making it uneven and eventually unsafe for travel.
To prevent this potential safety hazard, the owner of the twin arenas sought to create a new, more durable concrete slab that would be able to handle direct abrasive contact.
With the help of W.F. Botkin Construction Ltd., a ready-mix supplier, and one of Kryton’s distributors, Wallace Construction Specialties Ltd., the owner was able to get the concrete slab replacement they needed. This slab contained 45,000 kg of Kryton’s Hard-Cem, which will increase the hardness of its concrete paste and reduce its fine and coarse aggregate exposure, making the concrete slab capable of resisting significant abrasive and erosive forces. With this protection, the twin arenas can make space for a variety of sports activities and avoid repair and maintenance costs associated with worn concrete.
