A public infrastructure project in Gowanus, Brooklyn, is using Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) in a large underground Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) tank owned by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP). The tank extends 50 feet below ground and comprises five adjoining sections. Phase 1 involves more than 3,000 cubic yards of concrete, with KIM incorporated into the walls, slabs, columns and lids. A second phase is planned to follow in the coming months, adding more than 750 cubic yards of concrete. A CSO tank temporarily stores excess stormwater and untreated wastewater during heavy rainfall. By holding flows that could otherwise exceed the capacity of the sewer system and treatment facilities, it helps reduce untreated overflows into local waterways.
Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) is a hydrophilic crystalline admixture used to create permanently waterproof concrete.
