Anvil Centre is a civic centre and office tower located in the heart of downtown New Westminster. It was opened to the public on September 14, 2014. Situated close to the Fraser river, the soil is significantly influenced by the incoming tide. The area also has a high water table. For this reason, nearly all sorrounding structures are designed with above-ground parkades. Anvil Centre was the only structure designed with a 3-level underground parkade. The original design used an externally applied membrane to waterproof the shoring walls. But the underground river and the high tide from the Fraser caused flooding during the excavation. The shoring walls were far too wet to be able to use a membrane.
By using Kryton prodicts, they were able to preserve the original design of the Anvil Centre with the 3 underground parkades. While KIM admixture was used in the foundation wall concrete mix, the Krystol Waterstop System’s double protection was used in the construction joints. The Krystol Waterstop System’s double protection (external method) employs the Krystol Waterstop Grout and the Krystol Waterstop Treatment and simplifies the construction process. As the admixture took effect, residual water leakage self-sealed over time, providing an effective long-term waterproofing system. “We were impressed with Kryton’s high-level of customer support for the duration of the work,” said Ralph Herten of PCL.
Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) is a hydrophilic crystalline admixture used to create permanently waterproof concrete.
