Why Choose Smart Concrete?

We’ve heard from many of you that you are looking for better solutions to create more climate-resilient concrete structures while reducing their environmental impact and carbon emissions. That’s why Kryton offers Smart Concrete solutions.

Smart Concrete solutions maximize the performance and durability of concrete structures so you can build with eco-friendly confidence. With the application of our advanced technology, your organization can better comply with sustainability guidelines identified in commonly used frameworks such as the Global Reporting Initiative, SASB Standards, and LEED.

Permanent Non-Toxic Waterproofing

Now, more than ever, it’s critical to build structures to withstand the increase in extreme weather events. Part of that means preparing for greater impacts from water ingress and finding a waterproofing solution that works well in both low- and high-risk situations. To help you with that, we offer our patented Krystol® technology-infused waterproofing admixture, Krystol Internal Membrane™ (KIM®). Known to builders around the world as the product of choice for high-risk construction projects, KIM works well for any concrete waterproofing concern.

It’s all thanks to its VOC-free Krystol technology, which enables concrete to chemically react in the presence of water and unhydrated cement particles. That reaction then forms solid interlocking crystals that fill up the pores and micro-cracks of the concrete, giving concrete the ability to block out water and self-seal on its own for a permanent solution.

Moreover, KIM is compatible with our Krystol® Waterstop System to help you protect not just your concrete from water ingress but also the surrounding structural details as well, reducing the need for future concrete repairs or replacements. Kryton is the only manufacturer to provide a complete waterproofing system to ensure that your concrete structure remains permanently dry.

Sustainability Attributes

    •   Protects concrete structures from corrosion, freeze-thaw cycles, and more

    •   Mitigates alkali-silica reaction distress in concrete

    •   Is safe for use with potable water and certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 61

    •   Contains no VOCs

    •   Removes the need for harmful petroleum-based surface-applied membranes

    •   Eliminates additional excavation, labor, and material resources required for membranes

    •   Can be packaged in pulpable bags to reduce waste

    •   Ensures concrete remains recyclable, unlike when membranes are used

Increased Resistance to Abrasion and Erosion

To be climate-resilient, concrete structures not only need an effective defense against water but also the ability to withstand the effects of abrasion and erosion that result from chemical forces, machinery, and the presence of water. Many believe the best way to accomplish that is by adding more cement into a concrete mix. But with Hard-Cem®, you can achieve your desired level of durability without adding more carbon-intensive cement.

When added to a mix, Hard-Cem’s metal-mineral microstructure disperses throughout, strengthening the existing cement paste within. That doubles the wear life of the concrete and reduces concrete replacement and repair work. With less concrete required over time, you will significantly reduce the lifetime CO2 emissions of your concrete structure.

    Sustainability Attributes

    •   Reduces lifetime concrete carbon emissions

    •   Eliminates primary and secondary exposure to harmful silica dust

    •   Doubles the wear life of concrete

    •   Comes from post-industrial material, which contributes to the circular economy

    •   Is packaged in pulpable bags to reduce waste

    •   Ensures concrete remains recyclable

    Did You Know?

Concrete is the world’s most used building material. It’s abundant, affordable, locally available, and a vital element in the development of sustainable and resilient communities.

The largest contribution to concrete CO2 emissions is the manufacturing of cement, a binder used to increase durability in concrete.

Every pound of cement produces 0.9 lb of CO2.

With that in mind, a great way to reduce emissions is to reduce the cement needed for a project’s construction and maintenance, which our admixtures can help you do!

    Feature Case Studies

For over 45 years, we have supplied Smart Concrete solutions to more than 50 countries so builders and designers everywhere can protect their clients’ investment as well as the environment.

    TELUS Garden

As a 92,903-square meter (1,000,000-square foot) project in the heart of Vancouver, Canada, the TELUS Garden needed extensive parkade waterproofing. The project team chose to use KIM-treated shotcrete alongside Krystol Waterstop Grout™ and Krystol Waterstop Treatment™ to help with that. It led to the development earning both LEED Platinum and Gold certification.

    Atlantic Square

Close to a river in Glasgow, Scotland, and resting on heavy clay soil, the Atlantic Square had an increased risk of percolating water pressure. For protection from that, the project team applied KIM, the Krystol® Waterstop System, and a membrane, extending the structure’s life span and giving it an excellent BREEAM framework rating and an A-rated energy performance.

    30 Hudson Yards

As part of the largest private real estate development in the United States of America, 30 Hudson Yards was designed with the best in mind. It’s why the project team turned to KIM and other Smart Concrete solutions. They kept the project safe from water and earned it the H. Bruce Russell Global Innovator’s Award for developing a transformative and smart building environment.
