Background

As the third largest global electronics manufacturing services company and original design manufacturer, Flex Ltd. knows what it takes to remain an effective leader in the electronics and manufacturing industries. It’s not just quality service that they need to provide but also a commitment to social and environmental responsibility and customer success. Keeping that in mind, they’ve managed to earn 25 awards over the years. Some of which have included awards for leadership in sustainability, enterprise integration, and technology.

Of course, these would have been much harder to achieve if Flex Ltd. didn’t have high-quality manufacturing equipment to work with. That only helps, though, if the equipment remains in good shape. That’s why when one of Flex Ltd.’s water containment tanks in Tijuana, Mexico, started showing signs of cracking and rusting from water ingress, the company got to work looking for a repair solution that could permanently stop the water from coming into the tank.

Solution

It didn’t take long for Flex Ltd. to find a solution, however. After all, throughout Tijuana, Kryton’s Smart Concrete® solutions are known for their high performance in waterproofing and repair work due to the number of successful projects they’ve been involved in around the city. Two of these solutions in particular caught the eye of Flex Ltd. when Laval Tijuana S.A. de C.V. recommended them.

As a sub-distributor working under the waterproofing specialists of Punto Seco S.A. de C.V., Laval Tijuana S.A. de C.V. knew that Kryton’s Krystol T1 and Krystol Repair Grout could solve Flex Ltd.’s problem permanently. Krystol T1 would give Flex Ltd. the ability to reduce the risk of application issues and water ingress with a surface-applied crystalline slurry. Once applied to the affected areas, the Krystol® technology within this slurry would react to any water ingress for the life of the concrete, forming interlocking crystals that block any pathways for water within the concrete. At the same time, the Krystol Repair Grout would permanently repair leaking cracks using the same Krystol technology. Both of which come with Kryton’s limited warranty, assuring their quality.

Needing a solution that could offer such permanence and reliability, Flex Ltd. went with the recommendation of Laval Tijuana S.A. de C.V. From there, the sub-distributor went to work.

At the start of their repair process, they first removed the epoxy coating that was found on the concrete slabs and walls of the water containment tank. That allowed them to make the concrete surface adherent enough to be able to apply Krystol T1 directly. Then, they went on to remove some of the existing wire rods in the area. As some of them had corroded from contact with the water coming from the outside, they needed to be replaced. Once that was completed, the sub-distributor applied Krystol Repair Grout to structural joints and cracks and Krystol T1 in two coats across the floor slabs and walls of the water containment tank to give it permanent waterproofing. They also applied a surface wash with Krystol T1, water, and citric acid to regulate the pH of the water containment tank. That way, they could prevent skin irritation for those who might come into contact with the tank’s water.

Overall, the end results of this process left Flex Ltd. impressed. With Laval Tijuana S.A. de C.V.’s assistance, they had a permanently repaired and waterproof water containment tank, which would contain water safe enough to be around.
