Turbine Hall is an iconic building situated in the heart of the arts and culture precinct in Newtown, Johannesburg, and is an integral part of Johannesburg’s architectural history. However, after years of neglect, the basement car park was leaking like a sieve; the vast ingress of water entering through cracks in concrete was causing extensive damage. Normal waterproofing membranes were not an option because that would require the removal of the pavement above the basement car park, which was too expensive. Moreover, the client, Growthpoint Properties wanted the repair to be completed quickly and efficiently, without causing disturbance to the activities of the building.
Kryton authorized distributor, Sanika Waterproofing Specialists were awarded the repair project.
By using the Krystol Leak Repair System, they were able to waterproof the structure from the negative side and completely circumvent the need for excavation. Krystol T1® was applied on the the surface to transform concrete into a permanent waterproof barrier.
The client was extremely happy with the zero leak car park.
Turbine Hall has since become a much coveted venue for weddings, parties and corporate functions.
As part of the Krystol Leak Repair System, Krystol Repair Grout is a crystalline concrete waterproofing product that stops the flow of water to permanently repair leaking cracks, holes and joints in concrete, and can also be used to resurface and waterproof defective, damaged or deteriorating concrete. The grout employs advanced fiber technology and shrinkage controlling additives to prevent cracking.
