Sports schools are being built around the world with a common goal in mind: produce world-class athletes to represent their countries. In order to train the future athletes of Malaysia, integrated academic and sport schools are being built at an increasing rate. Upon completion in 2012, Sekolah Sukan Sabah will be the third sports school in the country and the first to enter Eastern Malaysia. Sekloah Sukan Sabah will be a state-of-the-art center with an integrated campus for class rooms and housing with facilities for every imaginable sport.
Sitting on an impressive 50 acre plot in Kota Kinabalu, Sekolah Sukan Sabah is a government owned and operated institution. The project only uses the best materials and technologies. One of the campus’s most important features is the Olympic-sized swimming and diving pools. Both pools would be constructed according to Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) standards. As this facility was one of the anchor points of the project, it would have to be constructed without error.
As the pools would be utilized daily for the swimming program, the waterproofing solution would have to effectively resist chlorine, constant hydrostatic pressure and heavy usage. Several concrete waterproofing options were presented to the consultants for selection. The consultants were looking for superior waterproofing solutions which had been used in the Kota Kinabalu region.
Kryton International Inc. was recommended by the design engineer based on their expertise as the world’s inventor of integral crystalline waterproofing. Kryton’s distributor in Sabah, Concrete & Waterproofing Technology Sdn Bhd suggested their flagship product, Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) for the project.
Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) is a hydrophilic crystalline admixture used to create permanently waterproof concrete.
