The Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) is a media powerhouse operating 6 national, 2 international, 17 state, 11 district radio stations and 2 television channels. As it is a government-owned organization, the building would use the highest-quality building materials both for the interior and exterior. The concrete waterproofing decision for the roof was critical as the RTM was keen on selecting a solution that would protect their concrete for the long run. After examining the project site, the owners found that the backfilling and surrounding areas were soft and contained a high degree of moisture. Damp rising within the building could further contribute to water ingress, composing the integrity of the concrete. Traditional damproofing was not an option as it is ineffective and has proven to fail over time. A permanent waterproofing solution was needed.
The owners turned to Kryton International Inc. as their concrete waterproofing solutions provider based on their expertise as the world’s inventor of integral crystalline waterproofing. Kryton’s unique Krystol technology was used throughout the building, from the basement ground level up to the roof.
Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) was used to waterproof over 4,000 cubic meters (5,200 cubic yards) of concrete which was used to construct the ground floor beam and slab, the roof slab and gutter and the cantilever roof. As KIM is added directly to the concrete at the time of mixing, the owners saw immediate time saving benefits allowing the project to be completed sooner. Longterm they will save on repair and maintenance as a result of costly call backs. Additionally, Kryton’s surface-applied Krystol T1 was used to waterproof over 1,000 square meters (11 500 square feet) of concrete which was used to construct the toilets, and all other wet areas. The owners were pleased to know that their permanently waterproofed roof would doubly serve as valuable insulation, acting as a sound barrier for their recording and broadcasting activities.
