Altorfer Caterpillar, a major distributor of Caterpillar equipment serving the Midwest with over 38 locations, developed a new 150,000 sq ft corporate headquarters, sales center, and service facility in Cedar Rapids.
The original specification called for a traditional dry-shake floor hardener. However, this approach introduced common risks associated with surface-applied systems, including inconsistent application, potential delamination, extended construction time, and variability in long-term performance— particularly in heavy-duty service bays and loading areas.
Ryan Companies and Ryan A+E selected Hard-Cem® to replace all surface-applied hardeners, integrating abrasion resistance directly into the concrete mix.
Hard-Cem® was used in all service facility floors and loading areas, with concrete pours completed in early 2023. By eliminating the need for surface application, the team avoided risks related to timing, labor variability, and environmental conditions.
The project was supported by Logan Contractors Supply, providing technical guidance and ensuring smooth implementation across the supply chain.
• Eliminated risk of surface delamination and uneven application
• Improved abrasion and impact resistance for heavy-duty operations
• Reduced construction time with simplified placement
• Delivered consistent, long-term performance
• Minimized future maintenance and repair needs
The facility was successfully completed in April 2024 with a high-performance slab system designed for durability and reliability.
