Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission’s (AGLC) new $153 million liquor distribution facility is 479,000 ft2 with a multi-level main floor and 2-storey shipping office. The new distribution centre will handle liquor products suppling over 1,300 liquor stores in Alberta. With over 30,000 products, the facility will receive and store products from over 70 countries and ship to over 320 Alberta communities.
Distribution warehouses are active centers with constant incoming and outgoing traffic. Warehouse floors are exposed to abrasive wear from forklift forks, pallets, pallet jacks and foreign particles in tire traffic. This abrasive wear of the concrete surface can reduce the load carrying capacity and result in a loss of riding surface where people and equipment cannot safely navigate worn concrete surfaces. Risk of equipment tipping, tripping hazards, equipment wear and tear, and cleanliness, reduce operational efficiency and increase maintenance costs. For this reason the project team decided they needed to find a way to make the concrete used in the project erosion and abrasion resistant.
Hard-Cem, Integral Concrete Hardener, proved to be the best solution for this project. It improves abrasive wear life of concrete up to 6 times and provides significant erosion and abrasion protection. Hard-Cem is compatible with conventional admixtures and air-entrained concrete. It is the best-in-class hardener for high volume, high traffic distribution facilities.
The design called for a 16” structural slab, 35 MPa concrete with Hard-Cem pours in 15 slabs of 400 m3 each.
Hard-Cem’s full depth concrete hardening will extend the service life of concrete in high traffic area’s subjected to abrasion, maintaining riding surface and reduce repair and facility down time.
