Kryton products waterproof concrete by a chemical process that develops insoluble hydration crystals called “Krystol” in the capillary pores of concrete.  This section outlines the use of Krystol Broadcast, which is applied to freshly placed concrete as a dry-shake and worked into the concrete surface during final finishing.  Krystol is also available as an admixture as described in section 03305 and Technical Bulletin 301.  Additional applications for Krystol include:   A brush-on surface treatment for existing concrete called Krystol T1/T2 (Section 07162 and Technical Bulletins 101, 102 and 170) and The Krystol Waterstop System for non-moving construction joints (section 03152 and Technical Bulletins 103 and 104).

Krystol Broadcast is intended for concrete flatwork and is best suited for thick slabs that will be powder troweled during final finishing.  Krystol Broadcast results in a smooth surface finish suitable for typical traffic or the application of common floor finishes.

A. Concrete Flatwork Waterproofing:  Dry shake application on fresh concrete, Krystol Broadcast, proprietary compound consisting of cement, quartz silica and active ingredients to promote growth and penetration of hydrophilic hydration crystals in the concrete capillaries.

B. Waterproofing material shall contain a non toxic, fugitive dye that provides visual verification of uniform coverage and incorporation of the waterproofing product.  The dye shall completely fade 15-45 minutes after application due to UV radiation and alkaline conditions.

C. Waterproofing materials shall not contain chlorides.

D. The waterproofing materials shall not provide waterproofing by way of hydrophobic ingredients such as oils, stearates, silanes, silicate salts or other hydrophobic treatment.  Manufacturer must certify in writing the absence of these materials.

E. Waterproofing materials shall be installed on concrete flatwork with a minimum design strength of 27 MPa, a water-to-cement ratio not above 0.5 and an air content not above 4.0%.

F. Waterproofing Treatment:  Provide installed products that comply with the following when installed according to the manufacturer’s written procedures to an approved concrete mix design.

  1. Penetration:  At least 4 inches (100 mm) penetration of crystal material, evidenced by independent microscopic analysis.

PART 3  EXECUTION

3.1 General

A. Safety precautions shall conform to the manufacturer’s MSDS and all local regulations.

B. Comply with Technical Bulletin #205.

C. Newly placed concrete should be free of bleed water and have reached sufficient strength to support the weight of a power trowel.

D. Float open surface, then immediately apply Krystol Broadcast evenly over the fresh concrete.

E. Coverage is 1Kg/m2.

F. As soon as the Krystol Broadcast powder has absorbed moisture from the concrete surface and the fugitive dye has started to dissolve, finish the concrete surface and incorporate the Krystol Broadcast into the surface during the finishing process.

G. Visually check for uniform colour distribution and intensity of the fugitive dye to ensure even application and incorporation of the Krystol Broadcast.  Colour will fade in 15-45 minutes from UV radiation and alkali conditions.

H. Moist cure concrete in accordance with ACI 308 for 5-7 days; if moist curing is not possible, use curing compound complying with ASTM C 309.

3.2      Construction Joints:

A. Construction joints are to be waterproofed using the Krystol Waterstop System consisting of Krystol Waterstop Grout and Krystol Waterstop Treatment as described in Section 03152 and Kryton Technical Bulletins #103 and #104.
