Plug-in Design Specification for KIM® (USA) Shotcrete

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY
A. Section Includes:

  1. Provide a hydrophilic concrete admixture that when added to the plastic mix will permanently waterproof the hardened concrete by way of chemically promoting the total hydration through a catalyst form of water bearing crystals.

  2. Provide all written materials, concrete mix design and site services necessary to complete the installation as herein specified.

1.2 REFERENCES
A. The concrete waterproofing admixture shall meet standard ASTM C494 Type D, water-reducing, set retarding and strength-increasing admixtures for concrete.

B. Concrete to be cured following ACI 308-92, Standard Practice for Curing Concrete.

C. Product to be certified by the ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) as a Chemical Admixture Used in Concrete (AC198).

D. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers C48-92 standard for Permeability Resistance.

1.3 SUBMITTALS
A. Certificates of Conformance or Compliance: before delivery of the materials a copy of the manufacturer’s certificates, attesting that materials meet the requirements specified, shall be submitted to and approved by the contracting officer.

B. Descriptive Product Literature: Manufacturer’s descriptive product literature shall be submitted and shall consist of detail specifications, available performance test data and instructions for additive addition.

C. Certified Laboratory Test Reports: Before delivery of materials copies of the reports of all tests specified herein or in reference publications shall be submitted to and approved by the contracting officer.  Test reports shall be accompanied by certificates from the manufacturer certifying that the previously tested material is of the same type, quality, manufacturer and make as that proposed for this project.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Provide KIM (Krystol Internal Membrane) waterproofing admixture as manufactured by Kryton International Inc., 1645 East Kent Avenue, Vancouver, BC, Canada, V5P 2S8. Tel: (604) 324-8280.

B. The addition of KIM to the pre-approved mix design shall be by a concrete ready-mix supplier approved by the manufacturer.  Addition of KIM by a non-approved supplier must be under direct supervision of a Kryton Representative or an independent materials engineering company.

1.5 DELIVERY AND STORAGE
A. Deliver materials in unbroken original packages bearing the manufacturer’s name and brand designation, batch number and date of manufacture.  Store in a dry storage area to avoid contact with moisture.

1.6 WARRANTY
A. Manufacturer’s Warranty:  Kryton International Inc. warrants that concrete treated with KIM, and where applicable, the Krystol Waterstop System, will remain waterproof for 25 years when applied in accordance with MANUFACTURER's written instructions. This warranty does not extend to, and the MANUFACTURER shall not be responsible for, Product System damage due to natural disasters, structural failures, or faulty workmanship.  Should there be a product breakdown or failure of the KIM Product System to perform according to the MANUFACTURER'S written specification, caused by faults or defective materials for 25 years, Kryton International Inc. will provide at no cost to the KIM USER sufficient material to repair such leakage. PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 CONCRETE WATERPROOFING SYSTEM
A. System Components: The system shall consist of the waterproofing chemical admixture, KIM and the cementitious waterproofing Krystol Waterstop System for construction joints, Technical Bulletins 103, 104 and 105 B & C.

B. Cementitious admixture shall consist of cement, quartz silica and other chemicals which promote the complete crystal hydration growth of the concrete.  The admixture shall be free of oils, stearates, chlorides and sodium based products.  Manufacturer must certify, in writing, the absence of these materials.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

GENERAL
A. Safety precautions shall conform to the manufacturer’s MSDS printed literature and the current regulations. 

B. KIM Admixture

  1. Concrete shall be designed in accordance with the standard recommended practices for selecting proportions for concrete, ACI 211
  2. KIM shall be added to the pre-approved plastic mix design at a rate of two percent of the cementitious content to a maximum of 13.5 lbs per cubic yard at the ready-mix plant or when pre-approved by manufacturer added at the job site
  3. KIM admixture shall be in addition to the total weight of the cementitious content
  4. KIM shall be mixed for a minimum of ten minutes
  5. KIM shall be strictly added as per manufacturer’s written instructions
  6. Provide concrete with a maximum water cementitous ratio of .45 proportioned to meet all other structural and exposure criteria cited elsewhere in the documents. The Portland Cement content of the concrete shall not be less than 150 lbs per cubic yard

C. Construction joint design (Krystol Waterstop System):  The joint design shall follow Manufacturer’s Technical Bulletins 103, 104 and 105 B & C for all non-moving joints.

D. All pipe penetrations should be treated per manufacturers recommendations (Kryton Technical Bulletin 204A).
