Coatzacoalcos II Bridge
Coatzacoalcos, Mexico

BACKGROUND
At one mile long the Coatzacoalcos II Bridge was the longest single-span, cable suspension bridge in the world in 1984. The bridge spans a salt water channel of the Coatzacoalcos River in the Gulf of Mexico. Because of the high humidity, salts and very high levels of pollution in the area, the bridge required an ultimate system to protect the reinforcing steel from chloride ion penetration, salt attack and airborne sulfates.

SOLUTION
The Mexico Department of Highways in conjunction with the University of Mexico City and the Mexican Cement Association tested Krystol™ T1 and T2 for two years prior to the project. Krystol™ outperformed all other products tested for protection of the reinforcing steel against chloride attack. Krystol™ Systems were the ideal materials to meet the concrete waterproofing challenges and continue to contribute to the long term durability of the bridge.
